Leading yourself through Transition  By Craig Nathanson Copyright 2003

It’s just happened to you. You have been laid off. This must have been a mistake. Let me check the paperwork. Surely, another HR error you say to yourself. Then you find out, it wasn’t a mistake. They really laid YOU off. Denial, anger, sadness and many more emotions rush though you. How will I support myself, my family, my hopes, dreams and plans, you ask?

Family, friends and strangers rush to give you the right advice. You listen to it all and yet still feel very confused. You continue to ask all the relevant questions; how long will this last, what will others say and what will I do?

The good news is you will land another opportunity but it will take time, strategy and confidence to move forward. What can you do to ensure your next steps are moving forward and not backward?

It’s critical to start asking yourself different questions if you want new choices and new answers.

For example, right now, take a pen and paper and answer the following questions.

Isn’t it great that………..

Do you realize that……..

I am grateful for………..

Because the questions you ask NOW while in transition will in fact lead you towards greater choices.

Our minds don’t like a vacuum, and will strive quickly to find answers for the questions you ask. It’s critical during this phase of your life NOW to ask different questions.

For example;

If I could live my perfect vocation day starting tomorrow, I would do………….

I would have the following kinds of people around me………

I would do the following things………………….

I would see and hear around me the following things

If I could smell and taste these experiences, they would be like………..

One’s path during transition can be created and or recreated with some deep thinking, some time and new strategies to look at one’s life and choices.

Whether your next move is engineering, marketing, retailing or house painting, time taken during transition to reflect on what YOU want and need in alignment with your most important values will be like placing a huge deposit into your vocational, emotional and personal health bank account.

Low balances here could lead to illness, unhappiness and a sense of lost. A high bank account in this area could lead to a greater sense of control over one’s destiny and personal progress.

The good news is you will land another opportunity but it will take time, strategy and confidence to move forward. Make sure you allow YOURSELF the opportunity to LEAD yourself through transition
